What it checks

  • Faces and hands: extra fingers, mismatched earrings, skin that is too smooth and teeth that are too even
  • Lighting and physics: shadows that point the wrong way and reflections that don't match the scene
  • Text and small details: garbled signs, logos that are nearly right, clocks that make no sense
  • Textures and edges: hair melting into the background, halos around a subject, repeating patterns

How AI image detection works

AI image generators build a picture out of noise, step by step, until it looks like what was asked for. They are very good at the overall look and still weaker at details that come from real physics: how light falls, how hands bend, how text is printed, whether a pair of earrings matches.

SUS IT's image check has an AI vision model examine the picture itself for these details, the way a forensic analyst would. It first works out what kind of image it is (a camera photo, digital art, a 3D render or an AI image), then looks for the typical look of tools like Midjourney, DALL-E, Stable Diffusion, Flux and Firefly, then works through a checklist of anatomy, textures, lighting and text.

It also looks for things that only seem like AI. Retouched skin, heavy filters, HDR, phone noise reduction and JPEG compression can all make a real photo look artificial, so the check tries to rule those out before pointing at AI. The report lists the case for AI and the case for a real photo, with a score and a confidence level.

Checking dating and profile photos

AI generated faces are now common on fake dating profiles, scam recruiters and bot accounts, partly because a brand new face won't turn up in a reverse image search the way a stolen photo does. Check every photo on a profile, not just the first one. Generated faces tend to look studio perfect with a softly blurred background, and a set of generated photos may show the same person with features that shift slightly from picture to picture.

If a photo comes back as likely AI, treat the whole profile with caution and check the account itself with BOT or NOT.

Checking news and viral photos

Before you share a dramatic photo, find out where it came from. Look for the earliest version with a reverse image search, see whether trusted news outlets have used it, and look closely at signs, crowds and hands in the background, which AI still often gets wrong. An AI check adds one more opinion, and the report tells you which details made it suspicious so you can look for yourself.

Limits you should know

No AI image detector is perfect, and SUS IT is no exception. Small, heavily compressed or screenshotted images carry less detail, which makes any check harder. A real photo that has been heavily edited may come back as suspicious, and the newest generators can produce images with very few visible flaws. When the evidence is unclear, the check leans toward Suspicious rather than calling an image definitely real.

The check looks at the picture, not at hidden file metadata or invisible watermarks, so if you have the original file it's worth checking its details too. For anything important, weigh the result together with where the image came from.
